I know serial is really old but I have some hardware that I need to configure via serial. I have a Dell Dimension L733r with a serial port and a 3COM Superstack II switch. Below is pictures of what I have so far. With the serial cable I have, do I need a gender changer or a new cable. I would need Amazon links. Thanks!

What you have there is a serial extension. You can either buy a new cable (http://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-Modem-Serial-P450-006/dp/B000067SCH/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1431700317&sr=8-6&keywords=serial+cable) or a gender changer (http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Slimline-Serial-Gender-Changer/dp/B00066HOXY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431700339&sr=8-1&keywords=serial+cable+gender+changer). The gender changer actually costs more than the new cable.

EDIT: According to the switch's manual, you will need a Null modem cable. If you want to keep using your extension, then you will need a null modem adapter (like this http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-RS232-Serial-Modem-Adapter/dp/B000DZH4V0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431701711&sr=8-1&keywords=rs232+null+modem)

Molex to SATA, lose all your data

So I can use my black cable with this: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-RS232-Serial-Modem-Adapter/dp/B000DZH4V0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431701711&sr=8-1&keywords=rs232+null+modem
