I'm thinking about plastidipping some pc components (Gigabyte G1 GAMING GTX 980, H440 Grilles), and I was wondering what the best way would be to get the parts clean. Also I'm looking for any tips you guys guys have on the topic, any suggestions may be helpful. And yes, I have seen Linus' graphics card plastidipping video. :)

Thanks!

Remove all electronic components, clean the non-electronic stuff with whatever you see fit (I used dishwashing soap and water.) Spray in thin layers, proceed to thick ones. Use as many coats as possible but watch that grilles don't get clogged (a toothpick is good to clean them out) and that holes don't get too small (like the fan holes, make sure the fans still properly fit.)

Using some isopropyl alcohol to clean off the parts and getting rid of dust and dirt are good. For plasti-dip I suggest give it a try and test first before spraying the parts since plasti-dip is more sensitive to spray distance and pattern than regular spray paint if you want to get an even or smooth finish. With that you can get a smooth orange peel type texture by wetting the surface but not letting it run. Where if you apply super light coats or have a far spray distance it can have a sandpaper or flocked type finish.

Plastidip is extremely overrated and, imo, looks pretty bad.

Only thing it has going for it is the ability to completely remove the paint if you need to RMA a component.

I've never gotten good results out of it. I've tried different spraying methods, distances, putting the can in warm water, shaking the sh*t out of it. All looked gross. I ended up painting painting my RAM light bars, ACX cooler, GPU backplate, and Kraken x61 radiator with White Rustoleum High Heat spraypaint, and a finish coat of Clear Gloss VHT Engine Enamel, looks so much better than plastidip imo.

The temperature rating of high heat spraypaint (usually 500 F) to plastidip (200 F) was also much more comforting. 200 F is about 93 C, and my old GPU would reach about 80 at full load, call me paranoid, but that was too close for comfort.

If you find you also don't like the look of plastidip after you've painted, using regular spraypaint on a GPU isn't as scary as it sounds. You can always buy an extra cooling unit off of someone who's watercooled their cards if you need to RMA.
