I have watched videos and read that you should pre-build your system outside the case to make sure everthing works.  After that, then you install your system and water cooling.  The one question I have is that my CPU does not come with a CPU stock fan.  Can I run the pre-build without the fan to make sure everything is operating correctly?  Or will there be a problem?  I don't want to get a stock fan I don't really need, since the system will be water-cooled.

Thank you.

running the system outside is non-essential. The reason being that if it doesn't work then you have to disassemble everything you've just built (which is significant with water cooling).

So no, you don't have to run it outside but I'd recommend buying a boxed CPU if you're going for Intel 1150 or if you're going for something else, maybe a cheap, small cooler will do the trick. Literally £5 extra is all it will cost so no worries, it's money well-spent regardless.

If you have a HEATSINK with thermal paste, you can test everything. But it will continue to heat till it overheats without a fan.

if there's a heatsink and thermal paste, you won't need to do that and it will not overheat for a bit.

I honestly would just buy a stock fan anyways for testing. If you are doing your own loop, have fun when you run all the tubing and everything and find out all your hard work was for nothing and have to disassemble your entire system.

You'll have to get an air cooler if you don't want to install your water cooling for testing, I do recommend getting it from a friend who maybe has a stock cooler lying around or grabbing one from craigslist (a lot of people have a stock cooler lying around)

Much better to spend £5 than to have to get a new chip

It'll be fine until the heatsink heats up (1-10 min depending on load/heatsink I would guess?), It's just running passive if you don't have a fan on it. Most coolers come with them on however? Why do you have one without a fan?

I purchased a new Intel i7 5960x and it does not come with any heatsink cooling in the box.  What should I purchase?
