OverClocking

Go to solution Solved by vSyNd1c4t3,

hey there, im new to overclocking for awhile now i have been wanting to overclock my cpu but never new how i have looked up on youtube but could never find one that suited me mabe i just wasnt looking hard enough, my specs are

i5 4690k

msi z97 gaming 3 motherboard

NZXT Kraken X31 120mm AIO Liquid CPU Cooler i hope this i good enough i replaced the fan with a Noctua NF-F12 PWM 120mm Fan

NZXT Phantom 530 Case Black

my case is filled with 9 fans, 2 in top, 2 bottom , 1 front, 1 rear, 1 side and one for my pivot fan all after market ones and very reliable

i want to acheive 4.2-4.4 Ghz

could someone who is an experienced overclocker please help me, what things do i need to change and so on the complete walkthrough, this may be to much to ask and i aplogize but hey never hurt anyone to ask

Thanks again if anyone help me

For intel...

Set manual voltage to 1.3v

Increase clock speed by +.1GHz from base clock. Run 5 min stress test

Pass - Increase clock speed by +.1GHz. Run 5 min stress test... Keep doing this until you fail.

Fail - decrease clock speed by -.1GHz You have found your overclock.

After you found your overlcock set your voltage to Adaptive Voltage with the same 1.3v.

DONE OVERCLOCKING

Notes:

DO NOT STRESS TEST UNDER ADAPTIVE VOLTAGE!

Turn on XMP profile. All settings should do themselves automatically.

Stress test with Aida64 Trial version. DO NOT STRESS TEST WITH PRIME95!

I haven't messed around with overclocking an intel chip in awhile, but my understanding is that it's not too different.  Raise multiplier, stress test, raise vCore if necessary rinse repeat until you reach a thermal or stability wall.

To start I would get some sort of baseline level of thermals and optionally, performance (if you want to know exactly how much you're gaining).  AIDA64 is good for this as is Cinebench.  Also make sure you know how you can clear your CMOS or if you have automatic OC recovery.

I would start by configuring stuff like Load Line Calibration and disabling power saving or other features that may interfere with the overclock in the BIOS.  This is going to vary a lot based on motherboard.

Then you want to increase the CPU multiplier in the BIOS.  Starting out you can increase it in 300-400 MHz chunks, but the higher you get the less you want to do.  First thing I do when I boot is launch Cinebench with some monitoring software.  If it crashes, you need more voltage.  Bump up the CPU vCore a few notches with the + key, just keep in mind not to exceed 1.3 V.  I keep an eye on temps, but I don't do a full stability run until I've reached my max overclock.  Rinse repeat until your temperatures are too high or you can't add more voltage.  How much you get is going to vary on your chip a lot.  Then at the end I like to run something like AIDA64's stability test for about ~15-30 minutes to see where temperatures peak and whether or not it crashes.  Then it comes down to real world testing.  Try using your PC for a few days and run your regular workload. (Gaming, rendering etc.)  If you have any crashes, then dial it down 100-200 MHz.

If any of that sounds like gobbly gook just ask and I can clarify.
