Don't get those fashion > function headphones from the likes of Bang & Olufsen, B&W, Harmon, etc.  Do you want open or closed headphones? You included classical so...I'd say Audio-Technica out of principle, but that's just me.

Surely you haven't tried B&W P7 and many of their speakers?

Recommending headphones without getting an idea for the tonal preferences of the individual is ridiculous. Most people can't STAND the way low end ATH stuff sounds. For example, ATHM50X's make my ears bleed. Such exagerated sparkly treble and bass that feels like it's playing from 25 feet away. No thanks.

Then again some people like them for reasons that I will never understand.

The exaggerated treble and lacking midrange of lower end Audio Technica does not make them suitable for classical music, IMO. I would be looking at something with balanced, forceful mids and highs, where classical lives, like midrange AKG's.

BTW, a dedicated USB DAC with a headphone amp goes a LONG way. If you don't plan on getting one (shame on you), keep it to 32Ohm or lower impedance headphones, or they will sound very flat, quiet, and boring.

Even an audioengine D1 DAC/amp for $100 will make a massive difference. Or for $200 you can get a Schiit Magni/Modi combo. Or for $250 you can get an ARCAM rPAC DAC/amp

Intel Inside. Overweight guy in his 30's outside.

I won't argue about the speakers since that wasn't what was being asked for. But, the P7 I don't have any experience with.  I'll take your word for it though.

No, Amps are only necessary if your cans are low sensitivity, and DACs only necessary if you have problems with your onboard.

Also, I didn't specify any particular headphone, and surely you must realize I'm in no way telling him to get M50s, OP didn't even give a budget, needs to elaborate before I give a more elaborate recommendation.  Besides, an Audio-Technica recommendation for classical always refers to their full-size ones, not the M-series or their low-end junk.

As a general rule if the Bowers and Wilkins are made in the UK they are better quality than the models from China; the ones from their home town of Worthing the best of all.

Well, then you need to see feel and hear oppo PM-1 :P

Anything can be produced anywhere and as long as they have the same level of QC, the result will be almost the same

@Pomfinator The p7 is really good if you want a portable with U-shaped sound sig

Some goods made in China are of good quality but QC is often lacking in the myriad of subcontractors. The other problem with China is the problem of your design being copied and a cheap knock off being made by a factory down the road.
