I have been wanting a nas for a while and I have a g3258 laying around. I have a dr2 6gb q6600 cpu old oc. Should I use the old system for a nas or make a new one with the g3258. How much ram and stuff does free nas need. I would like to do it diy and not a wd aio.

It really depends on what Operating system and file system the NAS will be running on. If you plan to do use ZFS, you will need to use ECC memory on a server board. I think 8 GB is the minimum. 16 GB is ideal.

I would recommending using the G3258 for the power savings. They also can use ECC memory when inside of a server motherboard.

For sure, get RAID ready drives, such as the Western Digital Red series.

How many drives are you planning to have?

One or two. Not many just for 2-3 pcs

I was thinking of building this. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/wvJGMp

FreeNAS uses ZFS, so you pretty much have to get ECC memory for it. You're asking for trouble if you try to use normal DDR3 with it. Unfortunately, server motherboards are quite expensive compared to normal boards. You need a board with the C226 chipset.

Hey there,

As @scottyseng explained, you would need at least 8GB ECC memory for FreeNAS because it uses ZFS. You would have to build a new system if you want to use it. You could look into some Windows or other OSs for this or look into a pre-built NAS. I could suggest checking out WD's solutions and see if any of them match your needs and budget: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=cIsrbm
