If it's an old system then the CPU cooler is probably clogged with dust.  Friend of mine had the same problem with his old i7-920 stock cooler.

Ha, in experiences with non-techies, someone called a tech worker an X58 socket! LOL!!

But cereally, try reapplying thermal compound, it might help.

Otherwise, replace your parts, they're too old. If you don't have the money at least get a better cooler...

Edit: Oh yeah, clean your entire system out, oughta be a LOT of dust in there....

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

you dont...

When dealing with hardware that old I'd look to replace the thermal pads, if they're stuck it could be that they've dried out which would also answer the temp issue. The important thing to look for when replacing thermal pads is the thickness of the pad itself. Too thick and it will do a worse job of transferring heat, too thin and the heatsink might not make contact at all.

You also want to be careful removing the pad(s) as you could possibly pull off some board components as well, I'd look online for guides.
