I have this http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4959#sp motherboard. The Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 7 and it features 8 sata 3 connectors but 2 of them are Gsata 3.

Chipset: 1.1 x M.2 PCIe connector
(Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280 SATA & PCIe SSD support)
2.1 x SATA Express connector
3.6 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors (SATA3 0~5)
(M.2, SATA Express, and SATA3 4/5 connectors can only be used one at a time. The SATA3 4/5 connectors will become unavailable when an M.2 SSD is installed.)
4.Support for RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10
Marvell® 88SE9172 chip: 1.2 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors (GSATA3 6~7)
2.Support for RAID 0 and RAID 1
* Due to system limitation, Intel RAID and Marvell RAID can only use either one.

From what I read Gsata 3 is awful compared to the Intel chipset. I'm thinking of switching my motherboard to the Asrock Extreme 6 http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z97%20Extreme6/ which features 10 sata 3 connectors. Should I do it? It's still under the 30 days and I would save money.

- 6 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s Connectors by Intel® Z97, support RAID (RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 10, Intel® Rapid Storage Technology 13 and Intel® Smart Response Technology), NCQ, AHCI, Hot Plug and ASRock HDD Saver Technology
- 4 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s Connectors by ASMedia ASM1061, support NCQ, AHCI, Hot Plug and ASRock HDD Saver Technology (SATA3_A4 connector is shared with the eSATA port)
- 1 x SATA Express 10 Gb/s Connector (shared with SATA3_4, SATA3_5 and M.2 Socket (M2_2))*
- 1 x eSATA Connector by ASMedia ASM1061, supports NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug
- 1 x Ultra M.2 Socket (M2_1), supports M.2 PCI Express module up to Gen3 x4 (32 Gb/s)
- 1 x M.2_SSD (NGFF) Socket 3 (M2_2), supports M.2 SATA3 6.0 Gb/s module and M.2 PCI Express module up to Gen2 x2 (10 Gb/s)

I need 8 connectors so should I be fine with the asrock versions or the gigabyte gsata 3 version? Thanks all.

Are you using ssds with the gsata? If so, switch boards.

It sounds like it's just a gigabyte branded data controller. Like as media ones. Simply third-part "not from the chip set" data controller.

On top of my previous post, I would trust those asmedia1061 controllers more than "gigabyte branded data"

I was going to add more SSD later but right now have 2 ssd and 4 hdd on the motherboard. Would I be fine putting the 4 tb hdd on the gsata 3?

I like both and I would save money by switching to the extreme 6.

Alright I will do it tomorrow. So by getting the extreme 6 I can still sli my titans at x8 and it looks like the spacing is the same.

My rule of thumb is fastest drives take priority in the better slots. Mechanicals would be fine in the third party ports, as they're not getting anywhere close to the ceiling, ssds, I would personally only put on the Intel ports, for maximum speed and reliability, but by no means would putting an sad in a third party (asmedia/gsata) port be bad.

Alright thank you. Think I will go with the Asrock extreme 6 because I plan on adding 2 more SSDs in the future and another hdd.

Well, good day. Glad I could help you.

Rule of thumb: use up Intel ports first, and if you have too many drives for that, use the mechanicals on the third-party ports.
