How many sticks are in there? If it's two as I assume from you saying only one is recognized, you may have to reseat the new SODIMM. It may not be making proper contact with the socket.

  

try seating the ram again. if that doesn't work, take out both ram, install one at a time and boot up with one stick, then do it again for the other stick. if both sticks work when used alone, try using the other slot only.

 

it could be a bad ram stick, a bad ram slot or incompatible ram sticks.

A few pointers:

 

Check how much RAM is shown in CPU-Z or Speccy.

Check if the Windows version is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Try reseating the SODIMM.

go to your control panel, then click system and security then click system. if it says 32 bit here, that would be why you only see 4gb of ram. a 32 bit OS can only use up to 4gb, anything over that is useless.

In cpu-z, only one stick is recognized. I have Windows 8.1 64-bit.
