Been trying to troubleshoot this for about an hour, my pc is suddenly very sluggish, if i shut it down and boot it up, the boot time is just as normal, but after i log in to windows and the the startup programs start popping up it takes ages, when i right click the desktop the loading icon also stays there for 5-10secs before the menu pops up, loading up a program is also extremely slow all of a sudden.

I have checked for malware and found nothing, i have checked the startup menu in msconfig and its all good, i have run a diagnostics tool for my main drive (840 pro 256gb SSD) and it shows up just fine and the overall health shows up as 100% fine.

I guess my only option is to try a clean install? it has been quite a while since i did a clean install, but i absolutely hate it, having to reinstall everything again.

edit: running windows 7 64 btw :)

When was the last time you had defragmented the SSD, how long have you had it?

NEVER DEFRAG AN SSD.

SSDs don't get fragmented like HDDs do, defragging an SSD will just kill its lifespan, instead SSDs use something called Trim, which I believe goes through and clears out data that was deleted from the ssd to help boost performance or something like that.

I've had the pc for a bit under 2 years now, but afaik defraging an ssd is a very bad idea?

Wrong, you shouldn't do it as often, it should be rarely

No, you're wrong. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2047513/fragging-wonderful-the-truth-about-defragging-your-ssd.html

and I think this video talks slightly about it.

Oh really? Go ask any other tech competent person on this forum, they will tell you the same thing. (NEVER DEFRAG AN SSD.)

Since it's only been happening recently, my first recommendation would be to choose the Last Known Good option by hitting F8 at bootup.  Another route I'd take would be a System Restore to yesterday or a recent point.  My third option would be to use CCleaner to defrag your registry (not the same as defragging a SSD, never do that).

Thanks for the suggestions, yeah i know that defragging an SSD is never a good idea, i took the option of just doing a clean install, its a bitch when you gotta reinstall alot of stuff, but then again its been almost 2 years since i did a reinstall. I tried doing a system restore that was 5 days old when i last did a windows update and the same thing still happend.

I started to suspect that maybe the SSD is "dying", but atleast with this method im 100% sure its not a windows error of some sort. But then again i ran quite a few diagnostic tools and everything said it was all 100% a-okay.

Seems like its running again now, just a bitch to reinstall programs and the games i had on my main drive, having a problem where there are no errors and something just runs slow bugs me tho.
