CF Card Read Errors?

So I have this Cannon EOS 400D and after letting a friend borrow it, I'm getting CF card read errors. My first impression was that the original card bit the dust, but after trying another, I am met with the same error. I am unable to take pictures, and a bit worried that i may have a dead camera on my hands... My fear is that they bent the pins of the card reader masking in the CF card improperly but I cant clearly see if they are bent or not.. I'm tech-Savvy but there is NO way i'm tearing into this thing. It's also an older model, and I fear taking it into a shop will cost me dearly..... Any suggestions as to why this is happening?

Have you tried reseting the camera?

Also how old is it?

Yea I've tried resetting it. The camera is from 2006 I believe.
