whats the differences between a 2.5'' and a 3.5'' HDD?

1 inch in size. Usually 2.5 (top in picture) are used for laptop drives or SSDs and 3.5 (bottom in picture) are for desktop pc storage

2.5" drives are laptop drives and are smaller.

 

3.5" drives are desktop drives and also able to have higher capacities.

Hey MrtopSodaPop,

 

The difference between 2.5" drives and 3.5" drives is mainly the size of them. There is no compatibility differences and both can be used on pretty much any system. When plugged externally, the 2.5" can be powered just by the USB ports, while 3.5" drives require additional power. Also since 2.5" drives are designed for laptops and other portable systems, they tend to have less platters, work slower and have less capacity, but emit less heat and vibrations. 

Other than that there are no other differences.
