PSU for eGPU

Go to solution Solved by Aniallation,

Thanks for the reply! It has the propper connector :)

I know the wattage is enough, but I still worry about if 12 amps will do the trick or not, since other PSUs are rated at 20A+. So basically, 12 amps, does it matter? And is it good enough for the 750 Ti Strix or not? Anyone know? :)

A buddy of mine has one he sells for half the price of a new one so I figured I`d make good use of it in this project :)

12A is more then enough for the GPU alone, other PSUs are rated at 20A+ are for either higher power cards in the case of an external GPU rig, or to power an entire system rather then just the GPU by itself.

So I have a HP ProBook 6560b running Win 8.1 and I wanna play around with it as a project. Updated to latest BIOS (F.42)

I am going to buy this ExpressCard to PCI 16x adapter, so I can run a desktop Gtx 750 Ti Strix GPU on my laptop.

My question, since my knowledge about power supplies are lacking, is how do I power the 750 Ti Strix with a 12V DC connector? (Asuming I must use 12V since thats what most regular computer PSU uses)

The EXP GDC adapters DC interface is rated 150W MAX, but says nothing about amps or volt. (This is where my knowledge is lacking)

I was looking at this 150W 12V 12A AC/DC adapter, will this do the trick? Is amps important? And how many amps do I need for the 750 Ti Strix? I know it only needs 75W but the lower watt adapters had less than 12A.

you'd be fine with a cx430, you don't need this much power but I'm pretty sure you can't get a smaller one.

12V DC Power In

P[W] = U[V] * I[A]

150[W] = 12[V] * 12.5[A]

That PCIe board is specified to be used with up to 150Watt PSU on the DCIn (12V)

Thanks for the reply! :)

However I was trying to avoid using a full size PSU. The whole point was to see if I could run the 750 Ti Strix on a AC/DC adapter. So straight from the wall to the EXP GDC board with the more mobile adapter.

12V DC Power In

P[W] = U[V] * I[A]

150[W] = 12[V] * 12.5[A]

That PCIe board is specified to be used with up to 150Watt PSU on the DCIn (12V)

So then if I understand that correctly a 150W 12V 12.5A AC/DC adapter will be fine with this board? But will it be enough juice to power the 750Ti Strix? (this card requires no aditional power trough 6-pin or 8-pin, it gets all the power trough the PCI-E 16x slot, wich then again gets the power from the 150W DC interface if I understand correctly)

Will this work out or MUST I use a full size power supply? In that case the whole point of this would be gone since it would look terrible, and is not really as mobile as it could be with the adapter.

You don't have to, as long as you have the proper connectors (may need to use adapters). Wattage is definitely plenty with that adapter, 150W is more then twice what you need to power a 750Ti.

Why get the Strix though? This is effectively the same thing without the 0db fan mode, for $35 cheaper. http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-gtx750tioc2gd5

Thank you! I will be ordering the 150W 12V 12A AC/DC adapter, the EXP GDC Beast and the 750 Ti Strix for this project then :) Looking forward to it! :D
