Sharing internet connection-Microsoft's ICS guide useless.

I'm trying to get my windows XP laptop connected to the internet through its 1Gbps ethernet connection to my windows 7 desktop's wifi connection (I forgot the model of the wifi card I installed in it). I've tried using Microsoft's guide and all that happens is my desktop's internet connection changes to limited, my laptop's connection stays limited and I can't use the internet on either computer. How do I share my Windows 7 desktop wireless internet connection with my laptop over LAN? (the laptop is my Tecra M5 with the dead backlight, I need a Microsoft OS on it so Ubuntu is out of the question and its GPU is really bad at running Windows 7-lag).

I followed that and it worked.

 

But maybe you've set up a static ip on the laptop?

Both were set to dynamic by default.

Edit: For some reason the option to select the home network connection doesn't show.

Why would you want to share a wireless connection in the first place? Laptop got a busted Wi-Fi adapter or something?

I've completely removed the display so its got no antenna, plus it allows my main rigs antivirus to filter the internet connection.

I've tried Windows 7, and it was slightly better after upgrading the RAM from 2x1GB @400MHz to 2x1GB @ 667MHz (maximum speed), but its too slow.

Basically you just need to enable internet sharing on your desktop's wireless connection and share it to Local Area Connection x that connect to your laptop. Make sure that LAN's IP/DNS on your desktop and laptop set to dynamic before you configure internet sharing. After setup finished, the LAN's IP will automatically set by Windows and your laptop's IP will get its IP from DHCP. Run ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew to refresh your laptop IP.
