ever since i first got my pc i haven't been able to consistently run stable games. i tried benchmarking and testing various components and now have finally received an error code from Hitman Absolution (as in the attached pic, sorry for the terrible quality, had to figure out a way to crop and compress it).  My GPU is an Asus GTX 770 DCUII

Does anyone know what these error codes mean? i would really appreciate some help. i already have the latest drivers and bios updates on my motherboard and GPU. thanks.

According to Microsoft documention:

The video card has been physically removed from the system, or a driver upgrade for the video card has occurred. The application should destroy and recreate the device.

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb509553%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

So... you're sure that your GPU is firmly seated in the PCI slot?  Also, are you sure your driver didn't somehow upgrade while the game was running? :)  Otherwise, we'd probably need more information to help you out.  Specifically, could you qualify "unable to consistently run stable games?"

Did you overclock your machine?  Have you generally stress tested your machine (as opposed to just individual components)?  I strongly suggest running IntelBurnTest and FurMark at the same time, according to this article: http://blog.szynalski.com/2012/11/25/the-right-way-to-stress-test-an-overclocked-pc/ I'd keep something like HWMonitor open so you can monitor CPU/GPU temps.

One idea that occurs to me is that your GPU might be overheating and disconnecting itself?

thanks for the response. I have run multiple test and never overclocked it because i could never run any games or benchmarks on it. i also have a 5970 that runs perfectly fine in the case. In the end i emailed asus with my problem and they accepted it back and are testing it. and to clarify, all drivers are installed (not beta) and i have used furmark and unigine benchmark to test it. i also used mem test to test the RAM and a secondary 850W PSU to double check that i dont have a faulty power supply.I also underclocked the card during testing but they kept crashing anyway.

Well, I have a sad news for you. I used to have the exact same problems as you do with my gtx 770 on the same exact game and only in that game. As i was searching for an answer on google I found that more people had this issue and came to the conclusion it was the game's fault and not my PC or GPU alone. The game has some kind of bug or something and it constantly does that. Every say 10-15 minutes it threw me out with exactly the same error as you have. Strangely this didn't happen with any other game. Blame the game, not your PC. I thought they fixed that issue by now.....well obviously not!!!
