Question about upgrading ram.

Go to solution Solved by warre,

Higher speed memory has little to no effect on gaming, and even in other applications except some pretty specific things, there is only a really small performance gain by the higher speed.

So if the main function of your pc is gaming, go for the 2x4 1600MHz kit.

HI guys. Below you will find a link to my Motherboard a z77x-ud3h.

I have been upgrading my computer and after the release of a few tittles that ask for 6GB ram and now 8GB I think its time a dropped a bit of money for more. I currently run G.Skill ripsaw 2x4GB ram 1600mhz. And I cannot decide on the best course of action.

I am thinking of adding another 2x4GB of the same ram for $95 aud. Another option that I am considering is sticking with G.Skill as I have never had a issue with them and going for 2x8GB at maybe 2400mhz... this will set me back around 200 though.

I am looking at this two ways. While upgrading to 2x8GB ram will give me faster mhz and in the future be able to add another 16GB is it really necessary? By the time it is my 3770k and ud3h will be a relic of the past and I would of moved on to greener pastures so to speak. While buying another 2x4ghz might not be ideal as I know I will be throwing it away it will add enough ram to last 2 or so years (unless something blows touch wood) then by that time DDR4 might be a bigger player and a lot more appealing price wise.

So basically add another 2x4GB of 1600hmz ram to last until next upgrade or get 2x8gb of say 2400mhz ram to use in my next upgrade with the option of being able to add another 16GB of ram.

What route would you guys go?
