I know this is probs asked a lot but I've decided on a 2560x1440p 60hz monitor and I'm wondering what should I use to drive it? Power limits aren't really an issue and I mainly play Civ V, Skyrim (modded) and Source games. I would like a bit of overhead to mod the hell out of my Skyrim but I don't mind sacrificing a few frames for that.

Cheers in advance.

As mentioned above 970 or 290x are where you realistically want to be, but if you can afford to, two of those cards would be optimal.

280x crossfire would also do a good job at that resolution and might be cheaper than other options.

Oh wow, that's more grunt than I thought for. I have always secretly wanted a 290x though. Dunno why, I'm a bit of a fanboy like that

I've had a 970 before and have 2 290xs now, though I did test a single 290x as well. At 1080p I couldn't tell any difference between the two, which is a good thing as both were extremely quick. At simulated 1440p the 290x is still good, but I found myself lowering things like AA and occasionally other bits and pieces to get a more consistent framerate. Never tested the 970, but benchmarks indicate it's better at 1440p.

280x crossfire should theoretically beat both, though people will blab on about how crossfire has loads of problems. It really doesn't, I've found, my crossfire experience has been excellent :)

I'll probs go for the 290x then! As you said the 970 does perform a bit better but I literally am that petty that I'll just buy the AMD card cause I can. #SaveAMD2015

290X would be your best bet because of super low prices every now & then, and it's quite on par with the 970 when you overclock it.
