CPU questions..

Go to solution Solved by leipero,

If you plan to keep that motherboard, don't expect high overclock. That CPU at stock frequency have 125W TDP. To avoid overheating, you will need to apply lower voltage on that motherboard.

I don't know for FX-8320, but on my FX-4100 default voltage set by MB BIOS is around 1.4v!! I wouldn't go above 4GHz on that motherboard (and that is max Turbo), and that would be enough for normal/gaming or whatever use.

In single threaded games/applications i5 3570k will have advantage.

Anyway, if you decide at the end to keep that motherboard and change CPU, PM me if you need help to configure it to work properly. I will enter my settings in spoiler bellow, just in case. Goal of those settings was to bring as stable as possible gameplay at 30FPS, however, i can't guarantee that stability with different GPU, but most likely, it will be same or better (good).

Hi!.. im an amd phenom II x4 955BE user.. im just wondering if..

1. it would be worth it to upgrade to FX 8320?

2. if yes.. how much performance gain i would gain from my old CPU

3. if yes.. how much FX 8320 differ from Intel i5 3570k "in gaming"

4. and lastly how much can i overclock FX 8320 in this board http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130679&Tpk=msi%20970a%20g43&IsVirtualParent=1 i know that this motherboard is missing a heatsink.. but im not having problem overclocking 955BE to 4.0Ghz so maybe i can use it till i can upgrade to new mobo?

i play almost all of the present games .. here are my specs

CPU: 955BE (overclocked to 4.0Ghz)

Cooler: Antec Kunler 620

GPU: Palit GTX 660Ti

Motherboard: MSI 970A-G43

Storage: Samsung 840 SSD

PSU: Seasonic S12II 620W

RAM: 8Gb 1600Mhz Averxir Core Series

just be careful to note the socket on your m/board, as the older chips was AM3 and the FX series is AM3+

normally its fine to put an AM3 chip onto a Am3+ board as AMD are good for backwards compatable, so i would check to see if your board will take an FX chip?

got to love Asus components
