It shouldn't tick. However, that's how nasty seagates die, so I would get a new drive and copy all data.

Even wd blue are fast and quiet.

I have 6 of them in my NAS and I can't even hear them.

Over my raptors.

There ya go. I have only one in my USFF OptiPlex 760, and I can hear it even over the loud HDD fan and the dried-out rear fan. And it shows no signs of any kind of failure.

Hey Nougatcookie,

Ticking is usually a sign that the drive has a problem. I would recommend running a diagnostic tool over the drive to see its status and health. I would recommend using the manufacturer's tool as it knows the drive's firmware best.
Also, as the guys recommended, you should back up all important files just to be on the safe side. :)

Regarding the drive, depending on what you are going to use the drive for, I could recommend checking out WD Blue, WD Black and WD Green drives.
WD Black is a performance drive designed for durability and speed. It is a bit louder than the other two drives, though: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=W1CkNW
WD Blue is an everyday drive that can handle gaming and some programs. It runs relatively quiet and is a pretty reliable drive: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=RWGLqJ
WD Green drive is designed for cool, quiet and energy-saving performance. It has very low noise levels, but might be a bit slow for a boot drive or heavier programs and games: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=xvhLll

Captain_WD.

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^

Yep it's already dead and right now it's just a walking corpse. You can *absolutely* lose data to this, in fact every moment you continue to use the drive it is inching ever closer towards doom. Stop using it right now and get a new drive to copy your stuff to. This said some drives continue clicking happily away for weeks while others die in minutes.

Depending on the model of 'cuda it's going to be roughly equivalent to the WD Blue in noise, but the catch is that quieter HDDs tend to be slower.

1. Overclock until the magic smoke comes out. 2. Modify until broken. 3. Fix and repeat.
