Z87 vs Z97

I am building a comouter sooner pr later and now im making the part list. However, I am going for 3 Way SLI with my old GTX 970 and have a hard time deciding to go Z97 or Z87. I am looking at these 2 motherboards, Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming GT and Maximus VI extreme. Which one should i choose? I am mostly gaming on this rig and sometimes do my schoolwork on it. I hope that this build would last over 6 years. 
BTW The cpu I am using is the I7 4790K.  I5 4690k

Depends on your budget for a Mobo Z97 is the newer platform with Brodwell support while Z87 looks like its gonna be left out.

Left out!!? Yah i know that pisses me off x-x. But ya Z97 to go for Broadwell.

Not much difference b/w those two. I would rather suggest to go for Z87.
