Ok so for my current new build that is ongoing and nearly finished, i have a really nice Asus Z87i deluxe m/board just bought the other day and will be coming in the post in a week or so,

next thing i have been looking for is the CPU and think that the Intel i7 4790 should be a good match for the m/board and should be able to run applications like 3D drawing, CAD, web design & graphics, video editing, gaming (lots of simulation games) and general use.

to save a little in cost i don't see the need of the "K" version as it does cost a bit more and so asking if anyone has a i7 4790 and does it do all the things they need?

As my current ongoing build is a m-itx build and with an air cooler, i am not going to overclock it as i want it to be powerful but run at stock settings (3.5 ghz) to keep the heat and noise down,

dont think a i5 is upto the job for multi applications i like the idea of 4 cores 8 threads you get with the i7.

any info or suggestions is welcome....

oh and i already have 16gig of 2133mhz ram for this same rig. just need the right CPU to go with it.

got to love Asus components

If going for the non-K, might as well save your money and get the Xeon E3-1230V3.

4790 seems to be the perfect chip for what you are going for.

with the board you already got, that is the most powerful compatible chip. you could get more power from a K version, but like you said, you want it cool and quiet, so you pretty much seemed to nail you own question. :P

and if you want you could get the 4770 and save some more, you lose .2GHz with this though.

4770 should be good enough as well, and since it runs at a lower GHz, It makes me wonder if it runs cooler as well, cause if you are looking for cool and quiet, this could help  you out.

Confused, why do you say this?

You just have to update the bios ;p

This is not an issue with the Z87I-Deluxe, as it has USB BIOS Flashback.

yes this is also a good cpu, i actually looked at it and its more expensive on places like newegg, ebay, amazon etc, even tried to get / bid for used ones on ebay and they are crazy expensive, so i think its best just to get a new one from newegg or NCIX etc.

If you're going to be using a dedicated graphics card, the Xeon E3-1231 V3 offers the same performance as the i7-4790 for a significantly reduced price, as it does not have integrated graphics.

thanks, something i will look into,  i wish all the older stuff was a lot cheaper, but sometimes its the opposite and cost more than the new gen stuff.

Thanks so much, and yes i will be using a dedicated graphics card so this could be just the cpu i need.

also good pointing out about the Z87i deluxe supports bios flashback and is easy to flash the bios to enable to use a new gen cpu :) you know your stuff and this m/board by the look of it.

Just get a 4790K. Its not much more just save up a few extra pennies and get it. OC is important, trust me. Also stay away from the 4770k as that (in some cases) has cooling issues.

My System has a Intel Core i7 4790k @4.5ghz Cooled by A Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO With a MSI Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition and 16GB of Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz Memory.

Are these older CPUs? The price does look very good, and hyperthreading, so yea.

Nope, the Xeon E3-1231 V3 is a Haswell Refresh chip, just like the i7-4790. The only things you lose over the i7 are integrated graphics and 200MHz (not like you'll notice the difference)

there is a difference of $50. so it should be fine with the non K purely because its a small form factor (m-itx) build and air cooler and should be powerfull enough without going crazy.

i know its easy for us all to say and i also say to others, just save up a little more and get this or that one, but at the moment i have more bills than i can deal with and its taken over 6 months now since starting to build my custom rig and i got everything except the cpu and eventually will replace the gpu to the final one intended (970 strix) later when i can afford to.

to put it in a clear way to understand i would like to have the cpu powerful but running low temps and speeds, so kind of like driving a V8 de-tunned Nascar sprint cup car down to the local supermarket to buy some bread and milk and short shifting and just using 6000 rpm though the gears instead of the 9000rpm it can do like a "K" version. it has grunt but i don't want to thrash it haha.

(the "newer version" isn't all that exciting, you're paying $30 for 100MHz more which isn't worth it at all)

The Xeon E3-1231 V3 doesn't support RAM with speeds over 1600MHz. Unfortuately for you that means you will have to clock back your RAM to 1600 MHz. And only supports dual channel memory, i dont know if yours is dual channel or quad channel

good point, after looking i saw this and so it would just make sence to stick with a i7 as i already have a 2133 mhz memory kit for the build.

thanks for pointing this out.
