HELP! 4790k CPU making noise

Go to solution Solved by dnkgaming,

I was able to fix the issue through AI Suite. By setting the CPU power phase to extreme it made the Mobo silent! Its under the VRM Digi+ power control tab! Solved it for me!

I have a 4790k That makes noise. Its not the fan thats making the noise.. the processor makes little clicking noises.. Really fast little clicking noises. I guess thats the best way to describe it. Had a friend who works at micro center bring another processor over just to double check. He threw a 2 core pentuim in and its silent. then i returned my old 4790k for a new one. With the new one the processing noise is still there. Its quiet during idle. Loud and annoying during gameplay. Mines coupled with the Maximus vii Motherboard. Any Idea why its so loud during gameplay? I havnt overclocked anything and i have stock cooler with regular temps! Perhaps its just this CPU?!

Case: Corsair 760T White PSU: Corsair AX1200i Motherboard: Asus Maximus VII Formula CPU: I7-4790k Cooler: Stock Cooler Ram: Corsair Vengeance 16GB 2400mhz GPU: Asus Strix GTX 970

what's your full specs? specifically the psu

CPU's do not make sounds. they have no moving parts. I am pretty sure it is the fan, unless you literally took out everything that moves,(HDD,all fans, CPU heatsink and fan just to put your ear on a now really hot and probably ticking time bomb to make sure 100% it's the CPU. which it isn't.

It might just be a wire hitting against the cpu fan.

CPU: Pentium G3258 @ 3.2GHz || GPU:(first release,used) MSI R9 270 OC || Motherboard:MSI Z97-G45 Gaming Motherboard || RAM: 8 GB G.Skill Sniper 1600 || Monitors: Vizio 22 in Ultra slim 1080p TV || Storage: Seagate barracuda 160 GB 7200RPM,(REFURB) 1TB toshiba 7200RPM || PSU: (stripped from 2013 CAD PC)Corsair CX600 build was under $420

Actually i did just that. I took mostly everything out. Ive got a few years building computers and my friend who was helping me has even more. We both agree its the processor. Were aware they dont make noise lol but it is. I took it out and swapped it with a pentuim and the sound went away. I used the same heatsink and everything. The noise isnt moving parts. I believe its electricity clicks.. this happened on two of my 4790s and went away with the pentium.

Also i have a ax1200i psu. Strix 970, Solid state hdd and corsair ram. no other moving parts to create noise. No hdd with disks or anything. Its the processor im 100% posotive. Sorry but it is a very true fact :( even if they dont make noise.. mine is

To confirm that its the processor when i move my mouse curser across the screen the noises comming from the cpu get a little louder and faster. As soon as i stop moving the mouse it quiets down a bit. But the noise is still loud while im gaming. Quiet at idle

I really don't believe it's a cpu making the noise lol.

i wish i could say the same. I could make a video tomorrow if it would help.

its not your CPU. Have you tried the 4790k in a different mobo? Maybe it's coil whine from your mobo.

your the first person whos suggested that. Sounds very likely this could be my problem. Ill test it on another board tomorrow and let you kno. If its coil whine would a new maximus vii mobo fix the problem.. i dont wanna change to a new mobo because i like the way the rog armor looks

Try a new board tomorrow, and if there is no noise, I would look into the Hard Drive if you have a mechanical one.  It may be what is making the sounds as well.

Main Rig:

i7 4790k @ 4.4GHz w/ H75 Liquid CPU Cooler - Asus Maximus VII Hero - 16GB G.Skill Triedent X 2133MHz RAM - 2x Gtx 660s in SLI - 120GB Crucial SSD - 1TB WD HDD NZXT Hue - K70 RGB Keyboard - Corsair Sabre RGB - Windows 8.1 - 2x Asus VN247H-P 1080p Monitors (I'm a sucker for lighting effects)

Server:

FX 8350 @ 4.0GHz w/ stock cooler - 8GB Crucial 1600MHz RAM - AMD Radeon HD 7450 GPU - 300W PSU - 120GB SSD - Windows 7

I got a solid state. Theres no noise comming from it plus Its not by the processor. I have a 760T case so i just swing the door open when i wanna listen to it better. The noise is comming form the processor Area. I put my ear right up to it after i unhooked all the fans while the noise was happening. Its either the mobo or processor. Everyone who hasnt seen it thinks its not the processor and everyone who has seen it agrees that it is lol i dont know what to do. Coil whine sounds like a whine and the noise i have sounds like little clicks. If you have a mechanical Keyboard you can imitate the noise im hearing by pressing your keys really fast. Thats surprisingly very similar to the noises im hearing.

This is a coil whine from your motherboard. It didn't happen on the Pentium for an abundance of reasons. I had a big thing typed out and accidentally went back a page so sum up is here.

Try a different motherboard with the 4790k. Specifically a higher-end one that is more likely to be able to run a 4790k. You're facing coil whine because the thing is really powerful. I've had it happen on my Core 2 Quad in the bootup grub menu in Linux. The framer ate moving the keyboard cursor thing shoots through the roof so coil whine occurs. If I had a lesser CPU and/or a better mobo then this would not happen.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

I found the same issue happening to someone else over on toms hardware but theres no solution. One user said if the power supply is massive compared to the power being used there will be some noise.. Any idea if this is true? I have a Ax1200i. Also, are there different types of coil whine? Mines not really a whine its more like the fast clicks from a mechanical keyboard. I realized it sounds very similar hopefully that will help.

YES THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE

And no, I still believe this to be the motherboard. Although the times when this happens to me are in low-power states so I guess it makes sense. Mobo swapping and PSU swapping sound like the only solutions.

hmm i see. well Thats also kinda weird because my motherboard is a high end motherboard. It costs 330 bucks. I hope i dont have to downgrade it just to make the noise stop.

Weird....

How about this. If you could make a bootable USB of Damn Small Linux real fast (it's like a 50MB download and a 2 min or less extraction time onto the flash drive) and just boot it for fun, does it constantly make the noise while running it? My idea here is that a 4790k is bonkers overkill on Damn Small Linux and if it makes the noise a lot here then yeah...

Hmmm....

I'm still debating in my head whether it's a PSU or mobo issue. Head says mobo still.

I'm glad someones on the same page as me. The bad Thing is i purchased an expensive board right from the start. Its a 330 dollar Asus Maximus vii board with all the bells and whistles. Hopefully i don't have to downgrade to make the noise go away. :(

Yea i cant see it being the PSU because the ax1200i is digital and if im not mistaken it controls the power output as needed. the mobo is whats gotta be the issue. Im not familiar with linux i just use windows. I wouldnt mind learning real fast if your willing to teach. Im a quick learner! If you walk me through it ill do it :)

Well, basically, Damn Small Linux runs solely off of your system's RAM and CPU. It's meant to be optimized on 128 KILOBYTES*** of RAM. It's just a quick and easy way of testing this issue. It should be pretty self-explanatory to use since there isn't a lot to it. Think Windows 95 with a modern web browser.

Go here, download it (.rc2.iso, second from bottom), extract it to a flash drive of at least 100 MB and you're good to go! Manually boot from it in your BIOS boot selection and you have a nice portable OS! Works great on ancient school PCs ;)

My idea behind this is, because it's so freaking light it should really test that issue of yours.
