ok this may sound really stupid to some of the advanced techies out there, but if i have a server running windows homer server, will it be taxing on my internet speeds when im not using it? i know its a stupid thing to ask but my friend has a NAS thats always on and it really drops his internet speeds. not sure if he was talking about upload or download but that does worry me.

thanks

It depends on your setup. If your router can is a gigabit router, you shouldn't have much to worry.

If you have a hub (if you're using a wireless router, it's usually a hub), the data transfer is broadcast to all of its connected nodes. This can get problematic sometimes if the data transfer is using up all of the bandwidth available. If you have a switch, they only communicate with the target node, so there is no issue of it using up all your bandwidth.

I'm guessing that your friend has a central wireless router that has all of this things hooked up to it and his home server has a fairly fast data transfer rate. His router is probably not gigabit so he can easily max out the bandwidth.
