AT&T Uverse modem upgrade

I have two questions. 

Question 1: Can I use the non-at&t provided modem with at&t uverse

Question 2: Can you recommend a good modem router combo unit that is under $200

P.S. I found this on the att website, it states that you can use a non at&t provided modem but i don't know how dated the article is

answer is no. that article is DSL not uverse. uverse uses machine certificates to authenticate their provided residential gateways.  you can use a 3rd party router though.
