Ive got two types of PCI-e cables, one 8 pin that splits into two 6+2 pins, and an 8 pin to a 6+2 pin, i will be using these cables to power 980's, however i don't know which ones i have to use, or if it even matters, Ive attached images of the cables themselves, the 8pin to two 6+2pins is the one thats not tied up, whilst the 8pin to 6+2pin is tied up. Can i just use one of the split cables to power the 980, or would i have to use two of the non split cables?

Don't really think it matters that much which ones you use because its from the same manufacturer, if im mistaken then yes there's a discussing point there. But I do recommend the non split one in order to distribute it right without having to go through extra cable management depending on your chasis.
