First off yes I know its kinda stupid to run a Ubuntu gaming build but I see alot more games being developed for linux since the anouncement of the steam machine. Plus iv pretty much fallen in love with ubuntu. (havnt booted into windows in over a year)

That aside here is the plan for now:

16gb DDR3 gskill ram

1TB WD green

NZXT tower

GTX 970

3.5 ghz VIshera 8 core

One of corsairs liquid coolers

600 EVGA PSU

Now its been about 7 years now since I built my current rig. (3.0 dual core FTW.) Because of that I have NO idea what motherboard would pair nicely with that CPU with the option for an upgrade down the road.

I do alot of programming and game design on UE4 so I figured having the 8 cores will be nice. I dont know whether to go with the 960 or 970 for good 1080p gaming?

Iv got a budget of 1K so im going for bang for buck here.

thanks for all the help!

That's awesome that you understand that the future for gaming on linux is bright!

You will want a 970, because you will outgrow a 960 much too quickly, especially if you want to do some Unreal Engine 4 stuff.

For the other components you should just refer to the individual subforums.  You can get a lot of performance out of 1K, it's just a matter of what is most important to you.

GTX960 or 970. Which ever you guys think would work best. AMD has god awful drivers for linux so im stuck with nvidia.

3.5 ghz VIshera 8 core

One of corsairs liquid coolers

600W EVGA psu will be enough.

Anyways, check first for the drivers - huge problem with unix systems.

Also, install some other window manager, than standart ubuntu's unity or gnome.

I'm always happy with 'awesome' or 'openbox'.

Awesome! Ill add the 970 and EVGA PSU to the list.

As for drivers iv checked most everything in the list. Im not sure if there would be any issues with the water cooler though, I didnt find much information on it.

All thats left now is the Motherboard!

Thing is.... For you to be playing games on Linux is a bit far away, like 2-3 more years IMO.

But that's my own opinion.

EDIT: Not old titles (VIne was the program i think), i'm talking about AAA titles.

The majority of my steam library run on linux. And with Wine I can play all of blizzards games and thats pretty much all I play. Never was into AAA titles like COD or AC. Its possible Ill set up a dual boot but I dont want to spend the 100 on win7 all over again.
