Hello all :D So I got a hand me down desktop from my brother to give to my buddy last xmas. I booted it up and at the time it worked great. It is now March and the computer has been sitting in my closet all this time, I took it out to give it to my buddy and it wouldnt post. Itd boot up, spin the fans, and give me case LEDs, but wouldnt post, wouldnt turn on the LEDs on my keyboard etc.

Dead. In. The. Water.

So I figured "I can either pay to get this 6-8 year old PC fixed or I can buy him a new one" So I figured well ill do both. Im having my dad [a Senior Sys Admin and PC Guru for ~15 Years] to look into why its broken, and at the same time go here and ask for build help.

What its for:

-Gaming

-Youtube Video Editing

-regular computer shit

What I Need:

-All parts EXCEPT a Monitor[using his tv], mouse/keyboard[gave him extras i got layin about] & speakers [he has an old pair of Astros]

Hard budget at 500 bucks. Keep it as low as possible though while still being usable please <3

AND this is something I will teach him how to upgrade as he gets the money to, so give him a moderate sized case please

Project Hephaestus

Intel Core i5 6600K @ 4.2GHz~ASUS Maximus 9 Hero~32GB DDR4 @ 3200MHz~ZOTAC GTX 980 AMP Ed.

Very much like both of you <3 I wouldve done it myself but ive been awake for the past 70some hours and i dont jack shit about price/performance as far as CPUs so i was like "ya know fuck it i got all these beautiful people to ask that can help me" lol

Is there any way we can cut that price a lil more? Maybe a smaller HDD in exchange for more RAM? idk. Also he WILL need an OS everyone seems to forget that when they do builds lol :P

mhm... I'm in the country of "full demo" versions...

90 $ for an OS will change a lot the system in that budget :(

Well thats true...ill just give him Linux Mint and tell him to buy Win7 lol

That way hell get Win10 for free

i chose ATX for the mobo as you requested

the cpu is much better than anything ive seen here yet.

the gpu might seem underpowered but thats an easy down the road.

cant ever have too many gpus

Problem is youre breaking my HARD budget of 500 bucks lol :P im not spending any more than that on the bloke

I think you can install steam in linux mint... so he'd play some games (like TF2, Civ, etc) while he waits :P. Just don't forget to install catalyst for fan control

yeah i was lookin in to it cause im building a linux "steam box" of my own once a more stable release of Steam OS drops and theres a shockingly large number of AAA and what id call AA games [nearly blockbusters] on Steam for Linux
