I just went through this exact same exercise.  I feel that I'm above average when it comes to tech, so I opted to get something above consumer grade and went with a Uniquiti EdgeRouter POE.  This router comes unconfigured and there is a learning curve to get it up and running how you want.  It is extremely customizable and has built in POE ports (24v and 48v) for use with their wireless access points.

At one point during the setup I was very close to returning it and getting some consumer grade router that was plug and play.  Overall, I spent about 5 days on the web and the ubnt forums learning about the different features and functions before I had it dialed in.  Before you jump into a router that isn't consumer grade, do your research and make sure you realize what you are getting.

They offer a step down version called the EdgeMax for $100 that has less ports and no POE capability.  You should check them out.
