What would I gain from overclocking my i5 4690k to speeds like 4.4- 4.6 Ghz? I use this computer mainly for gaming, and overclocking my GPU didn't improve my gaming experience too much. Somehow, I think I've lost the silicon lottery with this one.

System:

Intel Core i5 4690k @ 3.5Ghz, MSI z97 PC Mate, Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 gaming, 4x2 Kingston HyperX blu 1600Mhz, 1 Tb Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm, Corsair CX600M PSU, Corsair AF120 Performance edition 3x, Xigmatek Stock fans 3x, Xigmatek Mach PC Case, Asus VX239H 1080p IPS LED 23".

I dont know exactly how much would extra you would get. Im assuming you know the K series of Intel is designed for better overclocking. Only thing is that motherboard wont be great for overclocking. Do you have a aftermarket CPU cooler, because stock might not be powerful enough to manage that beast

Been playing on a laptop for 6 years, I play Dota 2 with 10fps. Some might say this is impossible, I say its just annoying

Depends on what games you play. I don't really see a reason not to overclock as you've already got a K part. Just get a decent aircooler and overclock it.

The stock cooler you've got cooling your CPU isn't helping your overclocking efforts.

I'm planning to get CM 212x Evo before I overclock, how will my motherboard affect overclocking?

yes, thanks for reminding me. That's actually why I haven't tried overclocking yet.

You're motherboard MAY affect how well the power is delivered to the CPU note the all - caps MAY, motherboards vary and this one is a regular cheap one that I plan to get myself. If you haven't built you're PC (which I'm guessing you have) then the BIOS might be a problem. Check out an LTT on over-clocking, they'll tell you all you need to know

Your motherboard mught affect it a bit because of smaller heatsinks than more enthusiast motherboard which means your motherboard voltage delivery will get toasty if you exagerate but it should be fine for 4,4 at 1.23

Cpu:i5-4690k Gpu:r9 280x with some other things
