I am looking into buying a new gigabit switch for my network and I have 2 options. Spend $100 on a 8-port unmanaged switch, or $500 on a 8-port managed switch.

It basically is going to be used to connect 2 desktops, 3 laptops, and 2 servers into its own personal network and thats about it.

What are the advantages of a managed switch vs a unmanaged for a simple network?

Is it bad that my dream setup only costs a few thousand not counting the obutto?

If you need stuff like VLANs or port mirroring go for the managed switch, otherwise unmanaged is perfectly fine.

If you have no knowledge in networking and configuring managed switches, then the thing will just act like an unmanaged switch and basically be a waste of money.  Some managed switches can't even be plug and play without some configuration.

Makes sense.

I am pretty confident in my networking skills, just wanted the opinions of people who are most likely smarter then me.

If that's the case, if you have no need for VLANs I wouldn't bother with managed switches :D

Why're you spending $100 on an unmanaged 8 port gigabit switch? O_o, mine was like $30.

Its not actually $100, was just numbers I pulled out of my ass to show the price difference. xD
