Right getting my first mechanical keyboard, I'm gonna get a corsair k95 rgb with XXX caps, it's my first with a bit of research and reading the pinned post in here I've seen red are the most natural transition from membrane however they don't give the tactile feedback, the next ones up brown give this feedback and are linear, blues are for speed typists and black isn't very... Interesting for me. I was thinking of browns anyone have personal experience with which to get as your first, corsair k95s arnt cheap so I'd love to get it right first time. I think you can change the keyswitches but it's a bit of a ball ache. I have no means of feeling any of the switches non of my friends have mechanicals and can't think of a shop which has them in store.

TLDR; which caps should I get for my first mechanical?

Okay the choices are reds, and brown. Red's are fast actuation switches with no tactile bump. They do require training to use, and you will bottom out a lot using them initially. However they have the fastest actuation of any switch. great for double tapping once you're used to them.

Browns are similar with a slightly higher actuation pressure, and a tactile bump once activated. They avoid the "mushiness" of initial red use. They tend to be a better all round keyswitch, with less training needed to get used to them.

My advice is still to find a keyswitch tester at a computer retailer and try it out, but if you can't I hope I've helped.

I don't personally speak from experience, but browns would be a great idea especially if you play games but do lots of work that requires typing on your pc as well.

However, I would still highly recommend that you go try to find some pc hardware store to try them out. You may find yourself liking something completely different than what we recommend.

Also, Cherry MX switches are not swappable for other switches, but the keycaps are swappable.

Then look on amazon, ebay, or massdrop (massdrop only caries them every once and a while) for a mechanical key switch tester. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Max-Keyboard-Keycap-Cherry-Sampler/dp/B00N6DXTW4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1427024641&sr=8-1&keywords=mechanical+switch+tester

Check for a deal on ebay. they pay import for you. If you can find one at a decent rate buy it. It's cheaper than deciding you don't like the switches on a k95

P.S. I had it easy. the original k95 I have only came in red. I'm used to them now. but still bottom out when typing.
