So I'm curious to know if this is normal when playing Battlefield with my new R9 290.

When I had a 7990 it ran BF4 smoothly at 60Fps. ( 1080p , Ultra Settings )

Currently with the R9 290 its runs smoothly at 60Fps ( 1080p , Ultra Settings ) but I noticed when it comes down to many explosions going off my Fps dips to the 40's - 50's.

Is this normal when you go from a dual gpu to a single gpu?

When I had my 7990 I had no dips what so ever. Then again that was a dual gpu and was clocked higher.

Just curious!

Let me know what you guys think!

Thanks!

7990 > 290

Dips are normal whether Xfire/SLI or not.

Yes, the 7990 is a faster and better card so this is normal

Well its basically 2x 7970's v a 290 so its expected that  the  7990 performs better

The 7990 is basically two HD 7970 (old version of R9 280X) in Crossfire

And Crossfire works remarkably well in EA's Frostbite engine. IIRC practically 100% scaling with two GPUs in BF4.

The same can't be said for most other games. I suggest sticking to a single 290 for the sake of ungradeabillity.

Yeah the 7990 scaled nicely with BF4!

I'm happy with the R9 290 it's just going to take me some time to get used to the dips.

It only happen a few times.

The jumpy framerate is a characteristic of the game itself. You will have frame dips no matter the graphics solution used.

You will have more consistent performance across games with a single 290 as opposed to the 7990 with its built-in CrossYeah

Just wanted to be sure and I agree with you on having more consistent performance with a single R9 290 over the 7990.
