Simple, i have a client who wants to try windows 10. i can help with that part on my own, but what she wants to know is after 10 is released can she get the full version of 10 for free since the machine is running 8.1.  Yes I did do a Google search and i came up short handed so any help be nice.  Also emailed Microsoft Tech Support but they haven't replied yet.

The short answer is: Yes.

The long answer is: Yes, but we don't know the logistics yet.

We still have no idea how the upgrade process is going to validate your system.

Do you simply enter your Windows 7 or 8.1 product key into a web forum on the Microsoft website, and they spit you out a Windows 10 key + Download link?

Do you have to be running the OS and run a Windows Update process that checks locally for the OS?

Potentially we'll even have both options available.

Worst case scenario, your client might have to reinstall Windows 8.1 for the upgrade to take place.

True, but I think the OP is more asking about the logistical aspect (Will a reinstall of Windows 8.1 be necessary vs having Windows 10 TP installed, etc).

I would assume that you would have to (if you're already running w10) downgrade back to 8.1, and then upgrade to the full version from there, just because that would prevent anyone who just downloaded the tech preview for free off their website from basically getting a free copy of Windows. IDK. Maybe Microsoft has a trick up their sleeve and will allow you to, as you said, just put in your w7/8 product key and be able to from windows update just install the full version of w10.

We will have to wait and see.
