I have an old computer I'd like to convert into a small home NAS box. (Old core 2 duo, 2gb DDR2 RAM) I'd like to use it to hold music/video libraries and also stream them to my PS3 and other computers on the network. I'd like to know what is the best free NAS program to stream to consoles, (ps3 media server works well, transcodes unsupported formats) stream to other computers, and run headless to be configured from another computer on the network. I want to be able to back things up on it, so is there a way I can just drag and drop folders onto my NAS through windows explorer? I don't have much experience with NAS machines or servers so all help would be appreciated!

I can't say what the "best" is, but there is FreeNAS and Openmediavault.

OpenMediaVault allows you to run a demo on their website to try out before you actually install it.

Does freenas have a PS3 media player plugin? Or any program that will transcode and stream to PS3?

The plugin MediaBrowser might work with a PS3. FreeNAS also has a Plex Media Server plugin that can be used, but it requires a bit of configuring(you have to configure the jail).
