Private Network Setup

Go to solution Solved by Avalon,

Router is to connect to the outside web. all you need is a switch.  And then if you wanted wireless, just add a WAP (Wireless access point)

you can still connect it to a router. A router is actually used to connect multiple networks together( either internal to internal or internal to external) but can still be used to connect two devices by it self. Home routers are a combination of a switch, router, and WAP. have you checked both systems and made sure they have network discovery and sharing on?

Hi, I'm trying to setup my own private network at home that does not use internet. I have my modem going to my router, and then from one of the four available ports of the router I have one of them going to my laptop and another one of the four ports I have one going to my desktop. When I try sharing a file, it won't let me and gives me a message shown below. (I blocked out that small section because of the name - so I don't get doxed or leak information or whatever)

I thought switches were just extensions to make room for more of something, that doesn't sound like that's the issue and if it is how would i hook it up

Hey,

This might be a little off topic, but does anybody recommend any good places to learn about networking? It is something I am keep on learning as I want to do it as a job when I leave education later this year. Any of you guys have any resources/videos I could read/watch to learn? This would mean a lot guys

Thank you for your time listening to me,

Kind Regards

This may sound silly but did you check to see if all your cables are capable of sending data in both directions. I'm guessing you just pulled a bunch of cables out of your stash and may have pulled some one ways out. Also have you checked that networking/file sharing is allowed on all drives in the network and aren't password protected. Then theres the chance that your router isn't set up for sharing. Make sure all devices are on home network.

sorry for the long list but there's so many things that could be giving you problems.

hope this was helpful in some way.

lol The only thing I've been doing to know this much about networking is just watching guides on youtube, first I learned about servers, networks, private networks... etc... I'm not really a guy to ask sorry lol
