Look up the products individually on AMD's page and do a comparison. For performance comparisons, look up reviews.

Does anyone here know how to tell the difference between a 7870 and a 7850.

Before you say check programs like GPUz, DX Diag, AMD Catalyst, Speccy, or MSI Afterburner they all just say "AMD 7800 series"

 

With software? Try Aida64

Pretty much. I've heard this question quite a bit and no one on google really has answered it at all so now people will see linuses forum and stop by.
