Ubuntu will undoubtedly help.

 

But speed of hard drive and speed of CPU aren't really accureate depictions of speeds.

low end machines are great for running linux. everything is so much faster.

Lubuntu or Xubuntu might be worth looking into if ubuntu is too slow, but I'd give ubuntu a shot first. they all install the same

You could try Zorin Lite if you want a Windows like experience.

Yes, it's exactly the same operating system, it only uses a different UI.

I would try Mint as well. It's like a barebones Ubuntu (It's based off of it) and it's really lightweight.
