Gaming Server Software?

I want to run a modded and a Vanilla Minecraft server on a different machine due to the server and client slowing things down on one machine. I don't really want to rent a server(s).

I know internet speed is a large factor, but I am not worried: there will wont be more than 10 players.

I just want to know every little thing about the software I would need and what machine I would be able to instal it on.

The Basic guide here should provide you with all the info you need. Modded servers are slightly different depending on whether you have chosen your own mods or you're using a pre-built mod pack.
