Sup bruhs,

So I've been thinking about the CPU for my rig.

I settled on the 4790K but lately I've been thinking about looking at alternatives because I don't care much for overclocking anymore.

Figure it's a win-win. No overclocking means, cheaper H97 motherboard, U14S instead of NH-D15 and a locked CPU.

There's a lot of talk on the forum of using Xeon's instead of i7's.

So I'm just wondering what ya'll would recommend in terms of a CPU + motherboard combo in regards to my preferences.

Xeon E3-1230 V3: 280 EUR

Xeon E3-1231 V3: 278 EUR

i7-4790                : 315 EUR

Are there any cons (expect for Xeon having no iGPU) that I should be aware of going with a H97 board and Xeon instead of 4790 + H97.

I will mainly be playing BF4, ETS2, GTA V, Flight Sim: X, Project Cars, Crysis 3 and the Bioshock Series. I know they're not all out yet.

I'm worried about the lower clock speed of the Xeon's, especially for Flight Sim. Should I be, why?

Any good looking H97 boards? I was originally going to get the Z97 Ranger..

I know these are some silly question but it'd be nice if you guys keep help put my over-analyzing brain at ease. :)

how much more is the 4790k?

4790k is a really nice chip. even if you dont OC it. it can hit 4.4ghz with stock ish settings and a good cooler. also has better resale value.

z97 ranger or gamer are good entry level boards. anything from msi is also very very good.

4790K is like 345 EUR right now. I'm just trying to shave off a few bucks here and there instead of paying for things I won't use.

Probably won't be changing the CPU until it becomes a bottleneck at which point I'm not sure it'll be worth much anyway.

i think the Xeon E3-1231 V3: 278 EUR offers the best "bang for the buck"

pair that with a H97 board and away you go.

if you have no interest in tweaking and tuning go with H97.
