Custom ROM Questions

Go to solution Solved by 1Scotty1,

Sure it is possible, you just flash a stock ROM as you would CM12 or any other ROM :) done that on my HTC One M7 a couple of times

I have an inquiry about custom ROMs that goes as such: If I were to install a ROM, would it be feasible to reinstall the ROM that the OEM installed completely as if I never uninstalled it. This is not for warranty, as I already voided that by fixing my previously water damaged Xperia Z2 manually. I want to install and try out a CM12 nightly but I also want to potentially go back to the Sony ROM in future when they finally go to lollipop or if I find CM12 unsuitable for daily usage. I did not do anything yet, but if going back is possible, I will probably install the ROM after spending a good hour or two looking up and reading/watching tutorials on how to do it. (This is a repost of a comment that I made on the pinned official custom ROM discussion thread.)

Where would I get a stock Sony ROM? Could I take it out of my phone with dark magic or would it be from Sony's site or where?

I found mine on xda-developers forum, you can try there, there are lots of them for different android versions :)

Excellent, I shall attempt to find one and if I do, I will custom ROM it up.

Good luck :D I had a "fun" time flashing AndroidRevolutionHD ROM on my HTC One :D

Just one more question: Would the stock "firmwares" found on this site when flashed allow Sony's OTA updates and proprietary apps? Or is that phone specific? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2759934

It depends ..

It may allow ota if you flash the stock ROM along with the stock kernel and stock recovery

And unroot your phone and relock the bootloader :)

They are the original stock firmwares, so yeah, they allow OTA updates :) Before I flashed AndroidRevolution on my HTC I wanted to flash a Google Play edition ROM which had OTAs too, but I had to turn Security OFF (S-OFF) but couldn't do it, so I went with AndroidRevolution :)

OK, I seem to have this somewhat figured out. On a guide for the ROM installation, a program called "Nandroid" could be used to backup the stock ROM. Would that be an acceptable option to reinstall the stock ROM?

It seems a new question has arisen, whilst following a guide, I was told to install another firmware via an FTF file from XDA, but when I find my build number (23.0.1.A.0.167) it says no root and to follow a guide. That guide leads back to the firmware download page. In another guide, I was linked to the firmware for a D6502 with the same build number, though I have a D6503. That is likely irrelevant as chrome identified the .zip as malicious (it was from XDA so it did not loot that shady). After I read a bit more, I saw that I needed an older firmware. Is this the process of downgrading? Or do I get the same one I have installed pre root?

Older firmware is downgrading, for example you have android 5.0 and can flash 4.4 if the lollipop is not suitable for you :)

So, if I want to install Lollipop to a phone currently running KitKat 4.4.4 with the 4.4.4 firmware not being rootable and only the 4.4.2 firmware being rootable. Would I have to install the 4.4.2 ROM or what would I have to do? All of the guides assume that I have the 4.4.2 firmware and do not specify the ROM.

That is strange, I never had to downgrade in order to flash a ROM. But if it is required, then flash 4.4.2 and go for it ;)

Do I have to find and flash a 4.4.2 ROM in case of a firmware downgrade? According to what I've read, a firmware downgrade can be performed on the 4.4.4 ROM and it should work. Also, how would I backup the TA partition? There is a huge amount of contradiction in the info on XDA and the Sony site. I want to back up the TA partition because according to many posts, that is where the DRM keys for some Sony features are stored. What kind of backup would back that up? Would rooting modify the TA partition?

Yes, flashing to 4.4.2 is a downgrade. And for the backup, I have never backed up anything, except text messages and the gallery, otherwise nothing and I had this phone for almost 2 years without any issue :)

Forget all that, I flashed an old firmware, rooted and was happy. The root tool backed up the TA partition with the DRM keys and I'm good to go :).

I used the XDA official guide to root. TA.img was backed up by the root tool. I backed it up manually with another tool for redundancy.
