building a nas

Go to solution Solved by brandishwar,

If you're going to be using random hard drives, you'll either want to set them up as separate volumes on the NAS, or configure them together as a JBOD -- "just a bunch of disks" -- which is basically where one partition can span disparate drives. Also make sure you're going to have a good network connection to it so that it's talking at gigabit speeds on your network and not 100Mb/s, just to ensure the best throughput.

so i have some spare parts and some random hard drives from things i have taken apart. i was wondering if i could use these to build an effective naz. i got pentium g and this mobo https://pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-h81mhds

i could get a raid card for like 40$ on amazon if necessary.

also can i use random hard drives different sizes and speeds?

ya for some reason the house i live in has a gigabit network even though i live in the boondocks thanks. :D
