non reference 980 Sli question

Go to solution Solved by Atmos,

The backplate tends to help actually with cooling, albeit very minimally. And the asus card shouldn't last much longer if at all than an msi card of equal caliber. They're both built to the same tolerances and quality pretty much.  In general, the asus card is a bit faster, from their binning process, so I personally would go with that. But if the msi card catches your fancy for whatever reason aesthetically then there's so "little" difference between the two you could get that w/o an issue.

If the backplate wont cause issues with clearance between the two cards in your system, then don't worry about it. That's the only real problem that can stem from it. Infact, the backplate helps stop heat from directly hitting the pcb on the lower card from exhaust on the top card, so if anything it helps a bit more.

So at the moment Im having First world problems and I can't decide wether to get the Asus strix or the msi gaming 980.

A pretty tech savvy guy I know says that the directCU cooling of the strix will mean it will last longer in the long run. However the msi card is thinner and doesn't have a back plate which would make the cooling in sli better right ?

How much better will the thinner card be for cooling and which one do you recommend.

People be looking for a reason to flame.

Larger = more surface area = more heat dissipation = less heat

That is what I think

EDIT

But yeah, in SLI the cars will be transferring the heat to each other unless the fans blow it away opposite to the other card (which will not happen  )

It kind of depends on your MOBO... for instance my Asus Mobo needs 2 way SLI in slot one and slot 4. Double check your board manual.

The projects never end in my line of work.
