HI all,

I am on my way to make a custom computer case with  a triple compartiment, but before I start working on it. I want to gather a few tips regarding airflow.

I have two idea`s let me know that you think.

Idea 1. Vertical airflow, from bottom to top using 3 x 140 MM for intake and 2 x 140 MM for exhaust. Vertically oriented

Idea 2: Left andright 2 x 140 MM on the left and 2 x 140 MM on the right. Then right above the motherboard a 230 mm as exhaust. Horizontally oriented

The main thing that has to be cooled are the graphics cards, the cpu will be cooled by a closed loop which will be located in a different compartiment. Compartiments 2 and 3. will either be below or behind compartiment 1.

compartiment 1: Motherboard, and everything else attached to the motherboard (doh) Drives not included

compartiment 2: Power supply, and other power related peripherals, and most of the other excessive wiring

compertment 3: Harddisk , SSD and Radiator.

Well, depends what you will have in the case and where. Heat rises so it will be better (in some circumstances BUT NOT ALWAYS) to have Idea 1. But depends what GPU you have I guess?
(What is you GPU? :D).

Edit:

What surface is your PC on (due to bottom fans if it is Idea 1.)

CPU: i5 4670k @ 3.4GHz + Corsair H100i      GPU: Gigabyte GTX 680 SOC (+215 Core|+162 Mem)     SSD: Kingston V300 240GB (OS)      Headset: Logitech G930

Case: Cosair Vengance C70 (white)                RAM: 16GB TeamGroup Elite Black DDR3 1600MHz       HDD: 1TB WD Blue                              Mouse: Logitech G602

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium                       PSUXFX Core Edition 750w                                                Motherboard: MSI Z97-G45               Keyboard: Logitech G510

Currently I have 2 x GTX 660 they will be replaced with a GPU that has a reference cooler. wether that be a GTX 970 or later version is to be seen when I am done.

Where does one get to custom make a case?

I like the intake option of idea two however I like the style and look of a vertical case like idea one. Function over style everyday though, idea two.

I was always planning on making a custom case, 1 because I think its fun to do. 2. In theory you should get the case that suits all your needs. 3. For some reason I dont like modding existing cases, Feels like I wasted money on a case that wasnt good enough.

Oh and the shape of the case will for the most part be same  for Idea 1and 2. its the internal layout that will be different.

Personally I like Idea 1 . because I can easly hide all the fan intake. You would see just a box from the outside. But I am thinking airflow would be better with idea 2. But  I have no experience what fans will do when placed accros each other.

Ahh right ok. With 2 GTX 660's they would defiantly go well with Idea 2. (Obviously so the side fans can cool them better). I take it you do not know the volume of your "future" case (it does not matter if you do not). But yeah, I think Idea 2 because exhaust it sorted with the 230mm anyway. (Then you could have your radiator in a different compartment like you said).

Overall: I think Idea 2.

Sorry you asked what I was using now, and thats a GTX 660 x 2 but when this case is done either a GTX 970 with a blower style fan or some newer released card with blower style fan will be put in there.

to enhance one direction airflow but I am guessing with idea 2 that doesn't really matter.

Ahh ok, with a GTX 970/GPU with a blower style fan(s) I would still rather have Idea 2. Just because of the reason if you are pulling up air from the bottom (unless you have good feet/standoffs on the bottom of your case) it will not suck in the "cleanest" air (even with a dust filter) not only that, you will be restricted on where you could put the PC.

My opinion is still Idea 2.

EDIT:

With Idea 2, you will be blowing cool air onto the GPU and then expelling the hot air (because of its blowing design) which will be better.

I agree completely which is why I asked. I'm very interested in designing my own which is why I asked where do you get this done? Did you go to someone else with an idea and they got the technically draft for you and now you are getting it machined? Did you make your own technical drawings and now getting it machined/know someone who is helping you machine it? What materials are you using to make it?

If you can make the motherboard compartment have just enough space for the components and all the fans/tubing/wires come from the back I think that would look really cool.

I be making it myself, majorly it will be will be wood. ofcourse the motherboard backplate will be still be steel  which ill be removing from a ATX case I have somewhere. And yeah the idea is to make the motherboard space as small as possible so that a minimum ammount if air needs to be refreshed.

I am also making a 3d model to see if everything will fit.

edited typos...
