I bought a Sapphire Vapor-x 7950, for $280 with the rebates about 2 weeks ago, but now newegg has the 7970 for around $300 and the ghz edition for about $360. If I had known to wait i definately would have gone with the better one. My question is, How do you predict these price drops? And if you can't, How do you know how long to wait for the part you've been eyeing to lower in price? or even a better part to lower to that price point? like what happened to me. If anyone has any helpful information then it would be tons of help.

I'm new to this...

So they lowered their prices on radeon cards about a week after new 700 series cards were released that had much better performance.

They lowered their prices to stay competitive.

(ie haswell just came out and it is better than amd 8350, the price of this chip might lower...)

You never know when good deals are going to spring up. If you see a price drop in anything you want, you should go for it, because it won't last long. That's what I do.

Begining of Summer (4th of July)

End of Summer

Black Friday/Thanksgiving

Winter Holiday time (Christmas, ect.)

^Usually continues through to be a begining of the year sale

*Sometimes* Easter time sale

^That is basically what every store follows with sales and how I buy my products. And if the store doesn't seem to have any of these wait for a big sale that store is having, don't buy parts outside of sale times (unless you happen to get a really nice deal on them).

Thats what I did with the 7950, it retailed for $360 and I got a good deal on it, but when I saw that the 7970 was the same price later I flipped every table in my house. I thought I was so smart for getting such a good deal.

does that mean the 7970 will now move to the $300 price point?

You just need to know how the competiton of the product is doing. Apart from Intel, they sell so much they I dont really think they did a crap. Amd basically has a main focus on the gaming community so without them they will lose a ton of money so as a result they are trying keep as many people buying their products as they can.
