Dell Computer Wireless Network Adapter issues?

I have had my dell inspiron computer for a year now and it has given me hell. When it started to slow down I thought the optimal thing to do would be to format it and re-install the operating system (windows 8.1). After that I downloaded all the drivers and thought things would be dandy. But when I tried to connect to the internet, it didn't reconize my adapter so I was unable to download the drivers. I went into the device manager and tried to download the drivers from there and it failed again. Btw i had the ethernet cable in but whats the point in having a laptop when the sonuva bit*h isn't portable. If anyone else has had this problem before or knows how to fix it I would really appreciate it if you could help me out.
