HP Pavilion 15.6" 15-p235TX W8.1 Notebook - Silver

Also how does the macbook pro 13" (4gb ram version) compare to other laptops around the same price range. 

 

not for gaming, just general use.

The only extras you'd get with a macbook would be an aluminum chassis, a higher res screen and a PCI-E ssd. This is a better all-around laptop unless you get the high end rMBP.

do you know anything about the heat output of the pavilions?

I don't, but Macs run hot.

ok ty, now time to convince my sister that the hp is better then the mac.
