They usually use "MSI Afterburner" and yes, all you do is just adjust the sliders. Your Asus card will work just fine for overclocking :D

Is it really as simple as just maxing out all the sliders? will the gpu be able to support it? im using one from asus.

How well it oc's will vary depending on the card but 270's tend to be good oc'er's.

for the ASUS R9 270, use either msi afterburner, or ASUS'S GPU Tweak, which is alot simpler imo. For the r9 270, you can literally pull every slider all the way, and it will function. (Not the fan one, keep that on automatic)
