Just built a desktop! few problems

Go to solution Solved by DevilishBooster,

Yeah thank you for all the help.

I will install OS and see what happens.

Quick question, Does the bios automatically directs me to HDD that has OS once the OS is installed even if the boot order is not changed (lets say highest boot order priority is on USB)

Yes. Once you have the OS installed it will automatically go to the boot drive by default. Even if you have it set where the boot drive is the last option of 10, it would recognize that those other options do not have a bootable program available (unless you put one there) so it will automatically skip them until it gets to the drive with your OS. After you get the OS installed you can go into the BIOS and check to make sure that the boot drive is set as the first boot option if you want to be safe.

Hi, I just built myself a new desktop and I was rather surprised that it was turning on and getting onto bios (I was struggling and maybe giving unnecessary force here and there, but it worked out).

I personally never have done any wiring (and my desktop right now has horrendous wiring). The problem that I currently have is that the computer keeps on turning on by itself (and tries to boot whatever that is on their priority boot order). after the shut down.

I didn't install my OS yet, so I am not sure if the problem will persist, but if it does persist, what could cause this problem?

Also, how could I fix this problem?

Honestly, I will probably bring this to computer parts store for fix (and hopefully wire management since I don't want to see this terrible wiring), but I still want to fix this on my own while I am at it.

Thank you very much in advance!

EDIT: I forgot to put my part lists, so here it is the link for it..

First, check to make sure that your front panel pins are connected correctly. Depending on the mobo you have (you should always list your system specs when posting a troubleshooting thread) you may have a "wake on LAN" function. This means that if your system is connected to the internet and starts receiving data, even when it is turned off, it will turn itself on. Not entirely sure that is your problem since you don't have the OS installed yet, but log into your BIOS and look to see if you have that function and, if so, if it is enabled. Also, as a general rule, you should never force components together. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "unnecessary force" since it can be interpreted subjectively, I would just caution you to be careful. Do you have a speaker connected to your mobo and does it give you any tones?

I am logging off for the night, but I will check back right away in the morning to see if you still need help.

Install your OS, and make sure the power button pin aren't bent, or shorting on something.

yeah Imma install OS today before I go to sleep.

I read from somewhere else that wireless device from mobo (for my case I have mini itx mobo that has wifi adapter built into it) might cause this as well. do you think that could also be one of it?

P.S. This doesn't happen if I don't start AT ALL in the beginning. it just happens after I shutdown the bios system.

yeah some components were unnecessarily tight (even though I checked with many people and confirmed that it would fit in my build. I guess it is my bad for trying to make myself mini itx desktop on my own without any of computer building experience. Of course, I never put force in the PARTS itself, I put forces in such things like frames and so on because the hole was not on the right spot by few mm s...

Anyway, I was thinking that could be a problem as well. My motherboard has built in wifi adapter (MSI z97i gaming ac), so I thought that maybe that was causing the issue.

That could be related to my first post.

When you enter your BIOS and then exit, no matter if you made changes or not, the system will always "restart". Does it restart over and over again, or just once?

Did you have to "force" your mobo in order to get the standoff holes to line up? If so, you may have a short on the backside of the board.

hmm Maybe that could be it (and that I am not really informed too much about these)

I will get back to it once I install OS and see what happens. Thank you all for all the help. I will add more to it if the problem persists. (But honestly, I kinda just want to sleep after spending 4 hours trying to get my heads around hardware stuffs as a software guy who doesn't have a too deep of knowledge about these)

Thats normal, the bios is just resetting.

no I never forced on such parts. I at least know that those parts are way too fragile for such thing (in fact, I was probably handling such components like cpu, mobo, ram and gpu like nitroglycerin).

When I say holes, I mean like the radiator to holder or the thumb screws on the cases.

If that is the case, I am really relieved. But I will get back onto this once I get my usb as bootable tool and install OS into my desktop.

Again, thank you all for all the help. I really appreciate it.

Ok, that's fine then. Get sleep, take a day away if you need to, approach it with a fresh look later and install your OS. If it boots up with no issues, you should be golden. Once the OS is installed, go into the BIOS and then exit (You dont have to make any changes). If it reboots once after you exit and goes straight into your OS, then everything is fine. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

So, I installed OS, the repeated restart ceased.

I had to completely take everything apart and rebuild it again because I realized wifi adapter was not placed correctly.

Rebuilding for second time was rather really fast (compare to 3~4 hours of pain and suffering that I withstood, it took me less than an hour).

Wiring improved by little bit, but there are still some wires that goes over mobo (I tried to give as much space as possible).

Everything works fine (except audio port even tho mobo has audio system in it.) and already loving my desktop (just for the fact that it runs quieter than my laptop)

That's good to hear. What size system is it? ATX, mATX? And what case are you using? If you haven't already, put together your build using pcpartpicker.com and post the link to your build so that we can see what you're working with. We may be able to give you some suggestions for cable management.

Its Mini - itx (but case is probably as big as mATX.

here is the link http://pcpartpicker.com/p/dncKdC and I just think I will have to think in detail about wire management if I really want to make it look nice.

It took me 4 hour ish for me to build without prior wire management, but it took me less than an hour for me to rebuild after thinking about the wire management briefly.

I only thought about where to route the PSU wire and case fans.

They decided to manage the wires in such way that it kinda pushes the mobo before the installation, I think I could've took that part and tied it further back from mobo slot.

Ooooh, nice! I've been wanting to build a system with that case. If I remember correctly from @Slick 's review of the case, there really isn't much in the way of cable management options, so you may kinda be SOL. Go back after a week or two and you might be able to fine tune it.

it has SOME management that you could do that the front of mobo in between the front case fan and mobo..

Also, I realized that the way 3.5 HDD slot and 2.5 SSD slot is kind of on such way that my PSU SATA cable was too short to make it to 2.5 SSD slot. ( so I had to put both HDD and SSD at same location which isn't bad).

there are small management spot here and there, the case itself has case wire tied down (but honestly, it wasn't the best from my experience).

Also, because it is compact that it is IMPOSSIBLE to do wire management unless you take out radiator or gpu. I would've preferred to have a nuts and bolts to hold all the parts of the cases, but they had this weird method which I didn't really knew how to disassemble.

I think they could've given bigger hole at the bottom of radiator for easier management but I could still put some wires underneath it. Also, MSI z97i had a weird orientation for 24 pins which was a small problem because it would force itself or other wires to make contact with radiator fan.

But in overall, I like the look, it wasn't the worst wire management. Really silent as well.
