I am doing a "junk build" with old components. The only thing that I don't have is RAM. The mobo is an ECS MCP78M-A (AM2 Socket) with a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ CPU. The board says it supports up to DDR2 1033. From what I understand, the Athlon CPUs can only support up to DDR2 800, and in order to use 1033 I would need a Phenom CPU. The problem is that I can't find any documentation of this online, not even on AMDs website. Does anyone know for certain if this is true, or can I use DDR2 1033 with the Athlon?

I think you can use it but just not at its full speed

Ok, that's what I figured. I'm not super knowledgeable on "older" CPUs since I only got into system building about 5 years ago.
