I beg your pardon?

An 8MP camera, one of the most popular camera phone sensors right now takes photos at 3264x2448 resolution and is a 4:3 aspect ratio. 4:3 is better known for the shape of traditional standard definition televisions and most old CRT monitors.

Now as for why, my guess is that 4:3 sensors are the cheapest to mass produce and buy parts for... but that's just a guess. You can cut it down to a 16:9 size but then you just cut information on the top and bottom of the picture. If it really bothers you, you can definitely edit it in post.

Interesting. I guess I have just been oblivious to it since Windows Phone just makes pictures taken 16:9 by default. Though, there is a 4:3 option in the settings.

I don't think resolution goes that high because when I zoom in, I see crappy picture especially on iPhone 5... I'm find with 4:3 but then I hate seeing black bars on the side of a 16:9 screen which annoys me so much lol...

The 8 megapixels refers to the resolution of a 4:3 image in the case of smartphones. Changing it to 16:9 actually just crops the photo, resulting in fewer pixels. I don't think the "standard" for still images will ever change to a 16:9 format, even though almost every medium we view a photo on nowadays is 16:9 or 16:10 (well, except for those antique digital photo frames :P) And almost every smartphone uses a digital zoom. The same thing as not zooming in at all, then cropping and blowing up a regular photo. I never use digital zoom.

Next time you take a photo, look up the resolution on your phone.

A 16:9 photo doesn't really result in more 'sideways' action it only crops off the top and bottom, which is undesirable because you loose the potential for capturing a wider vertical area, at least with 4:3 you can always crop it down to 16:9 post but you can never add in part of the image.

Also 16:9 is only good for landscape photos , ever seen an iPhone user take a portrait video? 4:3 gives manageable good looking portraits.

The image a lense projects over the sensor is a circle so you may as well capture as much of it as you can, you can always crop out but you can't add data that was lost.

Why don't smartphone take widescreen picture instead of the square(4:3) picture? I know that widescreen(16:9) picture would involve in different camera/sensor but why can't an app cut the side so that it's widescreen.

the galaxy s4 does take 16:9 photos
